New Delhi. 03 August 2026. A new Captain – a global flight plan – the Willie Walsh era begins in Indigo. For IndiGo, the change at the top comes at a defining moment in its journey. Willie Walsh, one of global aviation’s most formidable and experienced leaders, has taken charge as Chief Executive Officer at a time when India’s largest airline is looking decisively beyond its domestic dominance to establish itself as a serious force on the world aviation map. From the cockpit of Aer Lingus to the helm of British Airways and International Airlines Group and subsequently the leadership of IATA, Walsh arrives with four decades of aviation experience and an equally formidable mandate, to take an airline built on scale, discipline and operational efficiency into its next era of international growth.

But Willie Walsh does not inherit an empty cockpit – he steps into the deep shoes left by Pieter Elbers, whose tenure marked one of the most consequential phases in IndiGo’s and Indian Aviation’s evolution. Elbers presided over the airline as it moved beyond the traditional boundaries of a successful low-cost domestic carrier and began articulating a much larger global ambition. Under his leadership, IndiGo expanded its international footprint, strengthened connectivity, prepared for long-haul operations and set in motion a fleet strategy capable of supporting its transformation into a global aviation player. He helped give shape and momentum to the airline’s ambition of becoming a truly international carrier while retaining the scale and operational discipline that had made IndiGo India’s market leader. Walsh therefore inherits not just a successful airline, but an ambitious transformation already underway. His challenge will be to preserve that momentum, sharpen it and take IndiGo to the next level on the global stage.

IndiGo’s rise from the aviation ambitions of InterGlobe to India’s largest airline is a story of scale, consistency and an ability to read the enormous potential of the Indian market well before that potential became obvious to the world. The roots go back to 1989, when Rahul Bhatia established InterGlobe with Air Transport Management as its flagship business. InterGlobe began as a General Sales and Services enterprise through InterGlobe Air Transport, helping international airlines and travel companies establish and manage their businesses in India. That early exposure to airline sales, regulation, passenger and cargo operations and the economics of aviation created an institutional understanding of the industry that would eventually provide the foundation for a much bigger ambition—building an airline of its own.
