• Punjab-Based Aviation Startup Achieves World’s First-of-Its-Kind Milestone in Box-Wing eVTOL Flight Testing, Demonstrating Groundbreaking Technology with the Potential to Redefine the Future of Global Civil and Defence Aviation

26 October 2026 | India: Nalwa Aero Private Limited, a Punjab-based, DGCA Design Organisation-approved aviation startup developing indigenous electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has achieved a world’s-first technological milestone through the successful preliminary flight testing of its scaled Box-Wing eVTOL aircraft, demonstrating a potentially unprecedented integration of unconventional Box-Wing aerodynamics, electric propulsion and fully tilting-rotor technology at this scale.  They recently met Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, to present its remarkable technological progress and successful flight-testing achievements in the emerging field of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).

During the meeting, Kuljeet Sandhu – CEO and Nelson Salas – CTO of Nalwa Aero, briefed the Hon’ble Minister on the company’s pioneering research into an unconventional Box-Wing aerodynamic configuration, integrated with electric propulsion and tilting-rotor technology. The Minister expressed great encouragement and support for the company’s innovative vision and the progress achieved towards developing next-generation indigenous aircraft.

A Significant Milestone in Advanced Aviation

Nalwa Aero, through the successful preliminary flight testing of its scaled Box-Wing eVTOL aircraft, has demonstrated a potentially unprecedented integration of unconventional Box-Wing aerodynamics, electric propulsion and fully tilting-rotor technology at this scale. The trials successfully demonstrated low-altitude hovering and forward flight, marking a significant breakthrough in validating this century-old aerodynamic concept and advancing the future of global aviation.

Inspired by the century-old aerodynamic principles explored by Ludwig Prandtl, widely regarded as the Father of Modern Aerodynamics, the company’s innovative Box-Wing design seeks to overcome the aerodynamic limitations of conventional aircraft configurations.

Preliminary internal aerodynamic studies indicate the potential for up to 40% improvement in certain aerodynamic efficiency parameters compared with selected conventional aircraft configurations, subject to further experimental validation.

India’s Vision for Indigenous Aviation Innovation

Nalwa Aero is developing its five-seat eVTOL aircraft for applications including Air Ambulance, Air Taxi, Cargo Transportation, Tourism and Defence Operations, with an emphasis on improved efficiency, reduced operating costs and sustainable aviation.

The company received DGCA Design Organisation Approval in June 2025 for eVTOL aircraft in the five-seat-and-above category, followed by acceptance of its Type Certification application in January 2026.

Speaking about the achievement, Kuljeet Singh Sandhu, Founder & CEO of Nalwa Aero, stated:

“Our vision is not merely to build another electric aircraft, but to fundamentally rethink aircraft aerodynamics through an unconventional configuration. A scientific concept explored over a century ago is now progressing towards practical aviation applications through indigenous research and engineering in India. The encouragement received from the Hon’ble Civil Aviation Minister gives us immense confidence and motivation to accelerate our journey towards developing globally competitive aircraft technology.”

He further emphasized that the programme reflects the spirit of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India and Viksit Bharat 2047, demonstrating India’s growing capabilities in advanced aerospace research, innovation and indigenous aviation technology.

With continued research, flight testing and regulatory certification efforts, Nalwa Aero aspires to position India among the global pioneers of next-generation Advanced Air Mobility technologies, contributing to the country’s emergence as a leader in future aviation.
