New Delhi. 15 December 2021. The Indian Air Force in a tweet just now said, “IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of brave heart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family.”

And this puts an end to all expectancy of hope and speculation of the worst . An officer who was conferred the Shaurya Chakra in August for averting a major mid-air accident when the Tejas LCA he was flying developed a snag in the air, succumbed to injuries got in the chopper crash recently which killed 13 out of 14 including the CDS Gen Bipin Rawat. Group Captain Varun Singh was the Liaison Officer of the CDS for the latter’s lecture at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the lone survivor of the crash.

He was shifted to Air Force Command hospital in Bengaluru from Wellington’s Military Hospital a day after the crash for further treatment. Belonging to Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria Group Captain Singh was a second generation defence services officer, whose father Colonel KP Singh is a retired officer from the Army Air Defence Corps. His brother is a serving Lieutenant Commander of the Indian Navy . He is survived by his wife and two children.
