Washington DC. 11 April 2019. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. spoke recently with Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, Japan Self-Defense Forces, Gen. Koji Yamazaki.

Gen. Dunford congratulated Gen. Yamazaki on his new assignment as chief of staff, Joint Staff and for his successful completion of his tenure as chief of staff, Ground Self-Defense Force. The two senior leaders discussed the current security environment in the Indo-Pacific region, the importance of continuing to maintain close coordination on exercises, and opportunities to enhance interoperability. Gen. Dunford also reiterated that the U.S. is committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific region and the security of Japan. 

The alliance between the United States and Japan remains the cornerstone of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
