Bern, Switzerland. 4 JULY 2018. RUAG Space is the only company to receive supplier award three times. For the third time in 10 years, RUAG Space has been honored by the annual Supplier Award of the ZEISS Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (SMT) business group. The official Supplier Award Ceremony took place in Jena, Germany, on June 27.

RUAG Space started development work for mechanisms with ZEISS already in 2001. It recently concluded an agreement to cooperate with ZEISS in the development of actuator units essential for the production of microprocessors on silicon wafers with the help of extreme ultra-violet light. Such silicon wafers can be used for building microelectronic devices such as microchips for computers.

The actuator units used for the newest generations of lithography machines will work in a vacuum and with very high precision – a movement resolution of less than a nanometer. Suitability for vacuum use and high precision are two indispensable features in order to guide light beams to produce extremely fine patterns on silicon wafers.

“We are proud to transform our space technology know-how into non-space business success,” said Oliver Kunz, General Manager Product Unit Mechanisms at RUAG Space in Zurich. “Our work with ZEISS has been very motivating and we are looking forward to taking part in the state-of-the art semiconductor production.”

The Supplier Award is presented annually by the ZEISS Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology business group, based on supplier ratings across the categories of Supply Chain, Technology, as well as Quality and Logistics. The Product Unit Mechanisms at RUAG Space has now been recognized three times, in 2007, 2014 and now 2017, a record in the history of the SMT Supplier Awards.
