New Delhi. 31 March 2026. In a significant leadership move for India’s largest airline, the Board of InterGlobe Aviation Limited, which operates IndiGo, has appointed William Walsh fondly called Willie Walsh in the aviation world, as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals.
Walsh, a globally respected aviation leader and currently the Director General of International Air Transport Association, is set to bring decades of industry experience to IndiGo at a time when the airline is expanding rapidly both domestically and internationally. His tenure at IATA will conclude on July 31, 2026, following which he is expected to assume his new role at IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026.
The appointment signals IndiGo’s intent to strengthen its global positioning as it transitions from being a dominant domestic carrier to an increasingly influential international airline. Walsh’s leadership experience spans some of the world’s most prominent aviation institutions, including his tenure as CEO of British Airways and later as head of International Airlines Group, where he oversaw major carriers across Europe.
His appointment comes at a pivotal moment for IndiGo, which has placed record aircraft orders, expanded long-haul ambitions, and is building partnerships to enhance its global connectivity. The airline is also navigating challenges such as supply chain disruptions, engine maintenance issues, and increasing competition in both domestic and international markets.
Industry observers view Walsh’s appointment as a strategic move that could help IndiGo align more closely with global best practices, strengthen operational resilience, and enhance its engagement with international aviation stakeholders.
With Walsh at the helm, IndiGo is expected to sharpen its focus on long-term growth, operational efficiency, and global network expansion—potentially redefining its role not just as India’s largest airline, but as a key player in the global aviation landscape. All set to take over the helm of IndiGo, he steps into the formidable legacy of Pieter Elbers, whose tenure transformed the airline into a dominant force in Indian aviation while laying the groundwork for its global ambitions. Elbers strengthened IndiGo’s network, expanded international routes, and navigated operational challenges with steady leadership. Walsh now inherits not just a market leader, but an airline at an inflection point—poised for long-haul expansion and deeper global integration. With his global experience and policy influence, Walsh is expected to build on this strong foundation and steer IndiGo into its next phase as a major international aviation player.
