Rampur / Baramulla. 28 Jun 2017. Army’s53 Road Construction Company under Project BEACON in an inspiring engineering effort has constructed a 74m steel super structure bridge which will facilitate commutation of 50,000 residents belonging to border villages of Gingal, Dora Jattlian, Danisaidan, Choolan, Zamboor Pattan, Dawaran and Paran Pillan.

The villagers who reside along the Northern bank of the River Jhelum will be greatly benefitted by the construction as it also meets their long standing demand. Army’s ‘Chinar Corps’ and ‘Dagger Division’ today dedicated this bridge to venerate the sacrifice of Late Lt Col Sankalp Kumar, SC who had laid down his life while eliminating a group of six terrorists at Mohura Army Camp on 05 December 2014. For his conspicuous act of valour and exemplary fortitude in the face of terrorist fire, Late Lieutenant Colonel Sankalp Kumar was later awarded with Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous).

In the ceremony, marked by traditional military austerity, the bridge was inaugurated today by Dr (Mrs) Priya Sankalp, the wife of Late Lt Col Sankalp Kumar. Mrs Sushma Shukla, mother of the martyred officer graced the occasion. The ceremony was also attended by Lt Gen JS Sandhu, AVSM, VSM, GOC 15 CORPS and Maj Gen RP Kalita, VSM, GOC Dagger Division amidst numerous other civilian dignitaries and officials of Project BEACON. Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen JS Sandhu remembered the valour of the officer and said that his is a sterling example of selfless service beyond the call of duty. He added that Late Lt Col Sankalp has elevated himself to the exalted status of a martyr, will continue to live in the hearts and minds of all of us and will remain an inspiration for the generation to adore.
The bridge which will hereafter be known as the ‘Sankalp Bridge’ positions itself proudly over Jhelum River and will continue to reverberate the sacrifice of the brave officer.
