Barak-8 is jointly developed by the Indian Navy, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and Israel’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, Elta Systems, Rafael and other companies.

 

Barak – 8 is a surface-to-air missile (SAM). It is designed in order to defend against any type of airborne threat. Barak – 8 missiles exists in both maritime and land-based versions.

Barak 8 is based on the Barak 1 missile. It features an upgraded seeker which makes it equivalent to medium range naval systems like RIM-162 ESSM or SM-2 Standard.  The Barak – 8 system provides 360 degree coverage. It can take down an incoming missile as close as 500 meters away from the ship.

Apart from the missile, the Barak – 8 system includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile. Barak-8 is designed in a way to defend against short-to-long-range airborne threats, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, drones and projectiles.
