New Delhi. December, 2015. Government has accorded approval for women to join as Short Service Commission officers in the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on experimental basis for a period of five years. As per the scheme, such women trainees undergoing Stage-I training at Air Force Academy would be assessed for their suitability for entry into fighter stream. Based on the suitability and willingness, these women trainees would be selected for Stage-II training in the fighter stream on successful completion of which these women trainees would be commissioned into the fighter stream.

No such approval has been accorded for induction of women into the combat streams of the Army and Navy. This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh in a written reply to Shri Ajay Sancheti in Rajya Sabha .
