New Delhi. 31 March 2016: And finally the wait is over. Indian Army soldiers are eventually going to get bullet proof jackets. The army has agreed upon a contract for ‘emergency’ procurement of 50000 bullet proof jackets with TATA Advanced Materials Ltd, for Rs. 140 crore. There is a requirement of 353765 new jackets. The delivery of the jackets will start from August and must be completed by January 2017.
This is in contrary to reports which now seem to have been rumours. This was that the Defence ministry had decided that Tata Advanced Materials and MKU, the two Indian contenders shortlisted for supplying 50,000 bulletproof jackets, will supply 25,000 such jackets each.
But this is a news item of Times of India quoting sources in the Defence Ministry. We still are waiting for the official announcement.
